AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is an illness of
the immune system, is often fatal, and is caused by a virus. There are
over 20 million people in the world that are infected and the World Health
Organization predicts that this figure will double in the next several
years. AIDS affects the white blood cells, specifically the T-cells which
are developed in the bone marrow and are sent to fight invading germs
throughout the body. When these cells are not available in the correct
amounts the body is exposed to many more germs and is not protected
adequately. This virus, know as HIV, or Human Immune Virus wreaks
havoc on the T-cells and causes the body to become vulnerable to many
invading germs.
AIDS is spread through sexual contact most usually.
This could be through any sexual contact including vaginal, anal or oral.
Additionally, AIDS is transmitted through the blood during transfusions if
the blood being used is infected or by drug addicts who share their needles.
