Tips for choosing a Private Investigator

1. Most states require private investigators to be licensed.  Contact your local state licensing agency and check.

2.  Make sure you have a personal interview with the person who will be handling your case and have a list of specific questions that you want answered that will give you confidence that your PI knows the field well.

3.  Ask if your PI is a member of a professional organization.  This is important because it shows that your PI keeps up on the latest in the field and possibly has a network of colleagues that can be helpful in his work.  Two such organizations are the National Association of Legal Investigators and the American Society of Industrial Security.

4.  If you have an attorney you may try to work through her to obtain a referral since they often engage a PI to do research.  Also you may be able to have the PI services built into your legal fee structure so you only have to deal with one billing.
